Red Lion, PA History
Red Lion is a borough in York County, Pennsylvania, settled in 1852 and incorporated in 1880. The population was 6,149 at the 2000 census.
Red Lion, settled in 1852, was named after one of the first pubs in town, the Red Lion Tavern. It was once famous for the many brands of cigars made in the town. In fact, it was the cigar making capital of the world, producing millions of cigars per month. To this day, in the annual New Year celebration, the town raises a giant cigar instead of dropping a ball.
Red Lion was also known nationwide for its furniture industry, with several large factories producing ornate, hand crafted furniture for over 100 years. The furniture industry has mostly shifted to kitchen cabinet production and retail store fixtures over the last 40 years.
Several homes in the area were also used as part of the underground railroad, as Southern York county had many Southern sympathizers during the Civil War.
Red Lion was a main stop along the old Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad — known locally as the Ma&Pa Railroad. That railroad ran from York County to Baltimore, MD.

York County was created on August 19, 1749, from part of Lancaster County and named either for the Duke of York, an early patron of the Penn family, or for the city and shire of York in England. Its county seat is the city of York.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 910 square miles, of which, 904 square miles of it is land and 6 square miles of it (0.64%) is water. The county is bound to its eastern border by the Susquehanna River. Its southern border is the Mason-Dixon Line, which separates Pennsylvania and Maryland.
The York-Hanover Metropolitan Statistical Area is the fastest-growing metro area in the Northeast region, and is ranked nationally among the fastest-growing in the nation, according to the "2006 Population Estimates for Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas" (U.S. Census Bureau). The estimates listed York-Hanover as the 95th fastest-growing metro area in the nation, increasing 9.1 percent between 2000 and 2006.
